Insisting that only scientists have the right to determine

which fields are important and should get preferential funding (I mean the private money only, not the public purse) and which are not is quite dangerous and slippery road. Why only scientists should have this right? Why not let only politicians to decide who should be ruling a country as the general public is not competent enough to decide these matters?
I recall Clemenceau's famous line "War is too important to be left to the generals". Science is also too important to be left to scientists.
